Our Story
Carpenter Creek Ranch is located in the beautiful prairie of South Dakota. Our operation sits on the rich, black soils of the Dissected Till Plains. Framed by rolling horizons and exposed to the stark, powerful shifts of Midwestern seasons, our sheep are raised to be resilient, hardy, and structurally sound. Our love of animals dates back decades and our farm is home to a half dozen different species including horses, donkeys, dogs, cats, chickens, ducks and sheep! In 2022 we added Valais Blacknose Sheep and currently breed full-blood 100% Valais and breed-ups (%) from both Scottish Blackface and Babydoll Foundation.
What's with the names? We name all full-blood Valais after Swiss villages/places/people (Leuk, Münster, Mülligen, Meggen, Martigny, Mönch, Malix, Monthey, Nestlé, Nollen, Naters, Nadja, Nax, Nufenen, Nohl, Niklaus, Nyon). Its our way of honoring them by reminding folks of where these amazing sheep originated.

Our Breed up Program: EWES
When we started our Valais breed-up program in 2022, we decided to go two routes. We purchased a couple Scottish Blackface ewes, the most commonly used foundation breed, to pair with full-blood imported Valais semen. Scottish Blackface have similar characteristics to the VBN, which appeared to expedite the breed-up process. We also saw some Valais/Babydoll crosses and fell in love with their ultra sweet temperament and extra woolly faces and legs. Later we would discover that babydoll foundation can produce some exceptional breed-up quality ewes.
Our 100% full-blood Valais EWES
A year after we started our breed-up program, we decided to add a very high quality full-blood ewe lamb, Kiwi. We showed Kiwi at the first 3 National Shows where she was also graded (-1 Max Points in 2024 and 2025). Kiwi is the foundation of our full-blood program and has produced several outstanding offspring. As of 2026, we've been able to offer 100% full-blood ewe and ram lambs along with numerous levels of breed-up ewes and wethers. We want to give you options on how you start your Valais adventure, whether it be a breed-up from different foundations, a full-blood 100% Valais, a show animal or a pasture pet.
RAMS/SIRES in our program
We currently utilize Maximum Point rams from both imported and domestic lines in our full-blood program. Thus far the list includes Black Oak Braxton, Highland Isa, Parkdale Basil, Parkdale Elvis, Highland Indiana Jones and Iowa Kevin. We also have three 100% Valais rams on property and offer live cover at our farm.
